Film Editing

Continuity editing Editing that creates action that flows smoothly across shots and scenes without jarring visual inconsistencies. Establish a sense of story for the viewer.
Cut A visual transition created in editing in which one shot is instantaneously replaced on screen by another.19. Cross cutting - Cutting back and forth quickly between two or more lines of action, indicating they are happening simultaneously.
Director's Cut A director's cut is a specially edited version of a film, and less often TV series, music video, commercials, comic book or video games, that is supposed to represent the director's own approved edit.
Dissolve A transition between two shots, where one shot fades away and simultaneously another shot fades in. Dissolves are done at the lab in the printing phase, but prepared by the negative cutter, who cuts in an overlap of the two shots into the A&B rolls.
Dubbing The recording of dialogue in a sound studio, after the footage is shot, where the actors watch the film and match the lip movements.
Editing The work of selecting and joining together shots to create a finished film.
Editor's Cut An Editor's Cut of a motion picture is made by the film editor on his/her own, or working with the film director.
Fade A visual transition between shots or scenes that appears on screen as a brief interval with no picture. The editor fades one shot to black and then fades in the next, often used to indicate a change in time and place.
Final Editing The finished edit of a film, approved by the director and the producer. This is what the audience sees.
Jump cut A cut that creates a lack of continuity by leaving out parts of the action.
Matched cut A cut joining two shots whose compositional elements match, helping to establish strong continuity of action.
Mixing is a process during the post-production stage of a film or a television program by which a multitude of recorded sounds are combined into one or more channels.
Montage Scenes whose emotional impact and visual design are achieved through the editing together of many brief shots.
Non-Linear Editing Non-linear editing for film and television postproduction is a modern editing method which involves being able to access any frame in a video clip with the same ease as any other.
Picture Lock is a stage in editing a film or editing a television production. After all changes to the edit have been done and approved, the edit then achieves picture lock.
Rough Editing The editor's first pass at assembling the shots into a film, before tightening and polishing occurs.
Sequences is a series of scenes which form a distinct narrative unit, usually connected either by unity of location or unity of time.
Shot Reverse Shot Usually used for conversation scenes, this technique alternates between over-the-shoulder shots showing each character speaking.
Timing the process of adjusting the color balance for the printing of each scene once the negative has been conformed. (also called grading).
Visual Effect are the various processes by which imagery is created and/or manipulated outside the context of a live action shoot.
