Photography

Aperture In photography, lens opening or lens stops expressed as an f/no. such as f/22.
Bracketing the general technique of taking several shots of the same subject using different or the same camera settings.
COLOR CORRECTION The act of correcting for and eliminating an unwanted color cast. Color correction is performed on an entire image (called global color correction) or on just one part (called local color correction.
COMPACT FLASH CARD a mass storage device format used in portable electronic devices. For storage, CompactFlash typically uses flash memory in a standardized enclosure.
CONTACT SHEET An 8 inches x 10 inches photo made by laying an entire roll of 35-mm film negatives directly upon the photo paper and exposing it to light. Photographers use contact sheets to reveal what is contained on a roll of film before deciding which exposures they will go through the trouble of printing.
Contrast is the difference in visual properties that makes an object (or its representation in an image) distinguishable from other objects and the background.
Convertible Lens a lens containing two or more elements that can be used individually or in combination to provide a variety of focal lengths.
DIFFUSER a device to redirect of scatter the light from a source by the process of diffuse transmission. The effect is to soften the character of light. The closer a diffuser is to a light source the less it scatters light.
F STOP The f-stop of a lens is a number that represents the aperture opening. A large opening is a small f number, and a small opening is a large f stop. Lenses are rated in the range of f-stop numbers they can be set to.
FOCAL LENGTH the distance from a camera lens's focal point to its CCD imaging chips with the lens focus set to infinity. Wide angle views use short focal length; narrow field of view (telephoto) use longer focal lengths.
High Key A high contrast image consisting mostly of highlights with little shadow detail.
ISO Speed ISO stands for International Standards Organisation and a few decades ago they came up with a standard for measuring the speed of film called the ISO Speed.
Metering refers to the way in which a camera determines the exposure.
Over Exposure A photograph may be described as overexposed when it has a loss of highlight detail, that is, when the bright parts of an image are effectively all white, known as "blown out highlights" (or "clipped whites").
PHOTOSHOP a graphics editing program developed and published by Adobe Systems. To digitally edit or alter a picture or photograph.
RAW FILE contains minimally processed data from the image sensor of a digital camera, image or motion picture film scanner. Raw files are not yet processed and therefore are not ready to be used.
REFLECTOR used to control lighting contrast.
RETOUCHING a process of altering a print or negative after development by use of dyes or pencils to alter tones of highlights, shadows, and other details, or to remove blemishes.
Shutter Speed shutter speed is a common term used to discuss exposure time, the effective length of time a shutter is open; the total exposure is proportional to this exposure time, or duration of light reaching the film or image sensor.
WHITE BALANCE the global adjustment of the intensities of the colors (typically red, green, and blue primary colors).
